Is it worth grading base cards?

It is worth grading base cards only when the graded sale price, minus grading fees (from about $17–$60 per card in 2026), shipping and selling fees, beats what you would get selling raw. That usually means a card worth at least $50–$100 raw with a realistic shot at a 10.

Base cards of most players are worth only a few dollars raw and a few dollars more as a 10. With grading starting around $17–$60 per card, base cards almost never pay off unless the player is a star rookie or the card is vintage. Sell them raw or in lots.

Quick math

  • Break-even sale price ≈ (card value + grading fee + shipping + $0.40) ÷ 0.8675, plus outbound shipping. See the break-even formula.
  • A $50 card graded at PSA Standard ($59.99) has to sell for about $144.54 to break even.
  • Cheapest route in 2026: CGC Economy ($20) or CGC Bulk ($17 with 25+ cards). See CGC fees.

Before you submit

  1. Pull recent sold prices for the raw card and for each grade (10, 9, 8).
  2. Check centering, corners, edges and surface under a bright light. Be honest about the odds of a 10.
  3. Run the numbers for every grader in the calculator; it also flags upcharges.

FAQ

Do graded base cards sell for more?

Usually at the top grades. Mid grades often sell for about the same as raw, so the fee is lost unless the card is valuable or vintage.
