How to pick a PSA tier
Choose the cheapest tier whose maximum declared value is at or above what the card will be worth after grading. If a card comes back worth more than the tier allows, graders charge an upcharge to the right tier, so a card you expect to be a high-value 10 should be declared at that value up front.
The calculator does this automatically: set the company to PSA, leave the service tier on “Auto”, and it picks the cheapest tier that covers your highest graded value.
Worked example
A card you could sell raw for $40 that sells for $150 as a 10. At Standard (90-100 business days) ($59.99), total cost is the $40 card plus $59.99 plus $10 shipping = $109.99. A 10 nets about $124.72 after eBay fees and shipping, so the profit at a 10 is $14.73. Anything below a 10 usually loses money on a card like this.
